Some important notes…

In the Cabins you will find:

  • Bed, mattress, pillow, plenty of blankets and/or a duvet
  • A shrine with a rupa (Buddha image), bowls and vases
  • A meditation mat and cushions
  • Cooking and eating utensils, oil, salt, pepper, some herbs and spices
  • table and chair
  • Cleaning products and cloths, tea towels, toilet paper, matches
  • A map of Sudarshanaloka's extensive network of walks
  • Usually a selection of dried and tinned food donated by previous retreatants

We suggest you bring with you:

  • Bed linen (sheets, pillowcase), towel
  • Personal necessities - toiletries, clothes, medicines etc
  • Non-perishable food (see note below)
  • Sturdy walking shoes or boots
  • Winter gear: warm clothes, hot water bottle and raincoat
  • Summer gear: insect repellent, sun block, hat, mosquito net
  • Reading, study and art material as required
  • Incense and puja book

Shopping for retreatants is done weekly by the Sudarshanaloka Community and delivered to a drop-box near the hut.

For our retreatants without transportation, we will provide rides to and from Thames. Please allow NZ$ 5 each way.

At Sudarshanaloka Retreat Centre we strive to create an environment of peace and goodwill, putting into practice the advice the Buddha gave on how to live a simple, ethical and harmonious life. Please help us in this endeavour by observing the following guidelines during your stay:

  • refrain from cooking and eating meat or fish
  • refrain from alcohol consumption
  • refrain from smoking in or around the retreat cabins or stupa

Please also help us by:

  • Taking all your rubbish with you when you leave
  • Not throwing food scraps into the bush, as this will attract rats and possums
  • Not using candles - they are not permitted because of the fire risk
  • Telling us about any maintenance work that is required
